Triple Post…

It’s been a while to make an entry as we gather overwhelming information, but you get triple post today.

Free Seminar
MDA Guam is holding the Free Intro to Tech Academic Seminar on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 8pm. Only 12 more seats available as of this Monday. For more information, visit: http://www.mdaguam.com/ and contact them directly.

App Store?
We had overwhelming hits on our previous post, There’s an App for That (Scuba Version) on the Blog Action Day. We thought it was great way to share what we gathered in one place. Up and coming website, Appboy.com allows us to do that. We favorited and put a lot of Scuba Diving and Ocean Related mobile apps that may be of your interest on our AppBoy profile. You can directly purchase apps from DivingList’s profile.

The mobile platforms that they are currently supporting are iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Palm Pre. And we included them all.

One problem we ran into is that all the apps we saved are not appearing. We will keep you posted, but bookmark our AppBoy Profile and Stay Tuned: http://appboy.com/divinglist/

7 photographs. 7 captions. 7 prizes.
The last post of the day goes to Dive Junkie. They are currently running a contest on their Facebook Fan Page.

Come up with the funniest captions for each of the 7 photographs to stand a chance to win one of 7 Dive Books they are giving away! Visit Dive Junkie’s Facebook Page now to participate!

Don’t forget — they recently released Fall 2009 collection for their scuba diving apparel line. Now is the time to check out before they are all “gone” — www.divejunkie.com.sg

"There's an app for that" - we're sharing some "app" ideas and how scuba divers can utilize them to protect our environment.

From Blog Action Day Action:

This year’s Blog Action Day topic is… Climate Change. You as a scuba diver may not think that it may directly affect you. But there are a lot of small factors involved, and as a whole, it may come to affect all of us in a big way.

We did some researches. We also borrowed ideas from this website, Center for American Progress. (Actual Article HERE) Based on the ideas, we put some thoughts out there.

You might wonder why the title of today’s post is “There’s an app for that.” Well, we’re sharing some “app” ideas and how scuba divers can utilize them to protect our environment. Why mobile application? We’re sure you might be aware of the decrease in the forest, pollution, carbon dioxide, climate change… Not-so preferable cycle.

Seafood Watch by Moterey Bay Aquarium

Seafood Watch by Monterey Bay Aquarium (iPhone/Mobile Web Application)
There have been many write-ups about Seafood Watch. We’ve read them all including app reviews on iTune App Store. We also know that there are handy pocket guides for Sushi available by other organizations. What’s so different about this? First, it’s a mobile application. It’ll go anywhere with you even if you are in another country on vacation, trying that popular seafood. Is it good for you? What you choose may make a big difference.

The Sushi guide nicely comes with the Japanese Name and the common market name (quoted from Seafood Watch website), easy to read, and color-code lets you know which sushi would be your best bet while dining at your favorite restaurant.

There are 2 things involved in this small change — protecting your ocean and beautiful sea creatures by being aware and practicing to select sustainable seafood.

Don’t have an iPhone? No problem. Visit: http://mobile.seafoodwatch.org

And all in all, there’s an app for Seafood Choices, for Free.

Where by Where.com (Android/iPhone/BlackBerry/Palm Pre Application)

One of the reasons why you might go away for a day or on a vacation is probably because of that unknown adventure. To explore the local town, shop at local stores, or just walk around is always interesting. But where can you go? Asking hotel employees may be one thing but knowing “where” to go is another.

Where can help you all that. On your next trip, take “Where” with you. You can find Local Weather, Gas Prices (and Gas Stations), Traffic Information, access to Yelp to find restaurants (with phone numbers and address) and reviews, and you can even find Starbucks near you when you need a warm cup of tea after the dive.

How is this going to help divers to be sustainable? Think of it this way. You can find the information you need right in your hand at all time, no reason to drive around for hours trying to find places even if you are on a short dive trip.

This application is a GPS mobile application. This means you’ll have to have a satellite enabled service to use.

DiveLocator (iPhone Application)

Originally found the post on Scubaboard.com, DiveLocator is an iPhone application that provides an information on Dive Sites with a visual map (Google Map). Not only that, you can find the current condition in surrounding area with 2 tide tables.

How is this going to help divers? No more Print-Out maps. This also would potentially decrease the amount of time you’d be driving to find that hidden dive site.

PS> They also are accepting dive site information to grow their database. Click on the title above to visit the post from Scubaboard.com for more info.

Rent Cycle by RentCycle.com (Web application)

The reason why we picked RentCycle.com is because of their idea — reduce.reuse.rent. Rent Cycle can be potentially great for dive operators in vacation destination. Why? Well… Rent Cycle allows your customers to reserve rental gears and pay before their tour begins right at their finger tips. This web application has easy 3 steps for setup. First, you register. Second, you put the link to your Rent Cycle store on your website. Third, let customer book their rental gears and pay. All administration is done over the web. You can technically manage it from anywhere.

One of the great things we discovered about this service is you can create the store today with up to 5 items for free of charge. Features include an inventory management, online confirmation, payment processing, reservation systems, reports, and SMS (Short Messaging Services) to list a few.

How is this helping your dive business? Because you don’t need papers to track everything. You are recycling other people’s ideas to a good use, and reducing the cost but still renting.

Scuba Diving Mobile Applications (Platform varies)

Some of the things we discovered during our research is that a lot of people are interested in mobile scuba diving applications, iPhone applications in particular. For instance, if you run a search for “scuba diving application iphone” on Google, you’ll probably see a lot of forum entries by fellow divers seeking “it” app.

The use of mobile application on your mobile device make small differences, like reducing the use of the paper, decreasing the driving time etc…

After all, we decided to put a list here. Our research went so far and some divers that actually use listed software are unable to get back to us on time. But here’s what we found:

iScubaPlan (Originally posted on DiveVets.com) — Recreational Scuba Diving Application for iPhone/iPod

iDeco (Originally posted on DiveVets.com) — Multi-Level dives/Multiple Dive planner for Technical Diving for iPhone/iPod

V-Planner — King of Technical Diving Planning Software for Windows Mobile Phones and iPhone/iPod

My Deco Plan — Full Function Decompression Dive Planning Application on the web

So, what else can you do to be a sustainable diver?

Note:
All rights for the software/application listed above are reserved by its creator/owner/developer/business.
The result of this list is solely based on our researches and other divers. If you have other applications that you’d like to share, feel free to use the comment area below.
We also will add more as we hear back from our fellow divers.
We also would like to thank those who helped us today (and during our research) to make this post happen.

From Our “Action” List:

We took some time off in preparation for tomorrow — Blog Action Day. We don’t know how many people are aware of this program, but it is an annual event that all the bloggers in the whole wide world post an entry about the same topic on their own blog on the same day — sponsored by Change.org and hundreds of partners.

This year’s topic is “Climate Change.” DivingList will be posting “something” interesting for readers some time tomorrow. (can’t tell you when, okay?)

To support this good cause and to raise the awareness, we also would like to ask you for help. If you have your own blog, please register it at http://blogactionday.org/ and post an entry on Climate Change tomorrow.

But we’d like to go one step more. If you give us a link to your blog entry any time tomorrow, we will keep the list going for the scuba diving community and publish it with a list of Blog Action Day Participants at a later date as our thanks. (remember, we are the list after all…)

There are 3 ways you can do to leave the link for us:

@divinglist on Twitter

Comment or Wall post on DivingList Fan page on Facebook

Comment on this blog entry below today and/or tomorrow

And here are rules on posting your blog entry link:

Your blog must be registered at http://blogactionday.org/

You must be in Scuba Diving Industry or Ocean/Marine Conservation Industry
**Eco-Tourism is okay, so long as there is an opportunity for scuba diving/snorkeling

ANY DUPLICATE ENTRY will be removed and will NOT be listed

The more people are aware of the issue, the better. We want to help you and need your help. Please retweet this post or forward it to your friends who have blogs. It’s only once a year.

From Random Search:

We have been a bit away from the post as we have been preparing for the next big thing, but we did run into this website this evening. Also, we hardly ever speak about the Agencies in our post — this is because it’s one of our goals to share the “find” (usually local dive shop or operation). In this post, we do speak about TDI/SDI UK just because the actual promotion is run on TravellingDiver.com.

What’s interesting about Travelling Diver is that they sell a log book that is actually a travel guide. Who would’ve thought of that! The actual dive log page comes with the dive site guide — anywhere from the map to the cordinates to the entry point to list a few. It also guides you how you may want to conduct a dive at a particular dive site. This idea comes in pretty handy during the pre-dive planning stage and especially if you have never dove the dive site before. Not only that, you can log your dive right on the guide because it is a log book page.

Currently, they are running a promotion along with TDI/SDI UK — you will receive FREE £15 TDI/SDI Training Voucher on every £12.50 Travelling Diver Guide. It is good for selected TDI and SDI courses, such as Nitrox, Advanced Nitrox, Nitrox Gas Blending, Deep Diver, Computer Nitrox, Underwater Wreck course etc.

What better way to have them all? It just may be a great companion to your dive travels.

SWAESports.com: Expand your horizon, experience the nature, increase your dive adventure and class sales, and be a do-gooder all at the same time.

SWAESports.com

From Random Search:

One of the popular topics we have (according to our small stats) is Dive Travels. People often ask DivingList is a travel site — no, we’re not. But we search for dive deals, hear about dive deals, and deal with deals.

In order for us to share deals with the entire scuba diving community, there’s got to be someone else offering deals. Along with them, there’s got to be somewhere they offer deals. And the list goes on.

So we’ll share the gem of the day to accommodate divers (consumers) and dive operators both.

SWAESports.com is the Adventure Travel Website. SWAE is standing for Snow, Water, Air, and Earth, and pronounced as “SWAY.” What’s cool about this website from our experience is that we can technically search all sorts of adventures world wide in one place. What’s more, the part of the profit is donated to “1 percent for the planet,” which is the organization of the business members where 1% of their sales is donated to the environmental groups.

For Divers (consumers) — why you should SWAE:
Well, the easiest answer is… because you’re silently donating part of your travel cost to the environment group through SWAE while you are having fun Scuba Diving somewhere. If you are into other adventure sports, you are game. They pretty much cover every aspect of adventure travels. All in one. That’s why we think it’s a big “deal.”

Check Out: http://www.swaesports.com/

For Dive Operators & Dive Travel Operations — why you should use SWAE to expand your horizon:
We’re only going to say this once — SWAE offers $0 upfront cost to list your dive trips and all levels of scuba diving classes. Here’s the list of Sweet Things on SWAE:

If your trip or class is sold on SWAESports.com, then they’ll charge you a commission.

You can also integrate their reservation system on your own website and they do NOT charge you commission.

They offer everything electronically (paper-less) so that you don’t have to have the nightmare of papers.

They don’t play favorites on their searches — fair play.

They are all about marketing, not advertising. (do you see the difference?)

The list can go on, but let us tell you the experience. We faked and contacted SWAE after finding the site on becoming the Adventure Vendor. We figured we’d give them 48 hours, and we might get a ton of marketing pitches. Well, they proved us wrong. They got back to us in an hour with where to go to sign up and thanked us a ton… Human Operated website. We like it — a lot.

For more info on becoming an Adventure Vendor, check out: http://www.swaesports.com/adventureinfo/?a=whyjoin

So, what are you waiting for? Expand your horizon, experience the nature, increase your dive adventure and class sales, and be a do-gooder all at the same time.
